tisdd day 3

Day 3 focuses on ideation & prototyping

Ideation - Go for Quantity! 10 X 10 - draw 10 ideas, select one, and refine it with 10 more ideas. Based on a Harvard Business Research, there is a correlation between the quantity of ideas with the quality of ideas.

Idea Selection
Each idea is rated (1 - 10) for its feasibility, and impact on customer experience; and plotted onto a 2X2 matrix. Focus on the low hanging fruits i.e. high feasibility & high impact. Forget about those which are low feasibility & low impact. And perhaps consider those which are low feasibility but high impact!

Another idea selection technique which is quite neat is to draw an idea on a piece of paper (make sure it's self explanatory). In each round, participants move around the room randomly and exchange their piece of paper with whoever they cross path. Then, in pairs have a quick discussion and allocate 7 points between both ideas. Then repeat the process for several rounds, and finally total up the scores for each idea to determine which ideas are the favourites in the group. Really loved this idea selection method, however it's essential that the ideas translated onto the paper effectively for others to understand what it is all about

Prototyping - desktop walkthrough
One of the new prototyping methods which I've learned is desktop walkthrough; and it's one of the essential prototyping methods for service design. It was interesting how a desktop walkthrough sparked some interesting conversations in the group.

Prototyping - rehearsals
Another commonly used method for prototyping services is to simulate the service, via role play. Key idea is to rehearse the service i.e. role playing what a machine would do (similar to the wizard of oz method) to refine it. The rehearsal rules include 1. doing, not talking 2. play serious 3. use what you have. The investigative rehearsal (aka service simulation) process consists of 3 steps: 1. watch 2. understand (play & pause scenes) 3. change (list of changes for the next rehearsal). To document this new service, one can employ the customer journey map incorporating the new service; and compare the two different journey maps.

Some of the other activities:
1. passing the colour/ animals - similar to passing & receiving the ball game
2. 3 brains - math, colour, movement

A high energy day, and it has been really insightful to learn new ideation & prototyping methods particularly how it is applied in a service design context. Another interesting conversation that took place is whether one wants to be a driving school or a taxi driver.
