seek meaning and significance in your work
Read an article in the papers today about "How to keep workers motivated". And here is my response to it :)
I truly agree that human beings seek meaning and significance in their work. And the result of having meaning in your work is you'll be able to produce better results and more importantly you'll be committed to the organisation :) That's like on the wish list of every organisation - to have their employees being 100% committed to their work & the organisation.
I've always believe that one of the contributing factors of employees putting in effort in their work is because of they truly understand the significance of their work. They are able to see the bigger picture to what they do, does make a difference and impact! However, I also see that it's the management who needs to help its employees see that connection all the time. Then at the end of the day, we know that we're working not solely because of the financial rewards, but we know that we're making a difference/an impact to society :)
I honestly have not seen the management of various organisations I've worked with communicate the significance of their work. I'm not talking about CONSISTENTLY communicate. Not even communicating it. And then I've also seen why there are so many people who work in AIESEC full time even without getting minimum salary, being super damn committed. They would give their best and go all the way to get things done! I believe it definetely has got to do with communicating the higher purpose - the significance of your work to the society!
Sometimes I wonder, if this fact of communicating the higher purpose/significance of your work is an important factor in keeping employees motivated and committed, why does the management of many organisations not bother about it? Even in the one I'm attached with currently.
