it only takes a term to make things real

I still remember at NATCON 2004, a bunch of students from TBS were present at the conference. That was the time that this initiative group started. And at NLDS 2004 - youthopia, this initiative group became a protem LC. I didn't get to know many of them and form friendships as they were only present for 2 days at the event.

In term 05/06, I was on the MC; and one of my main areas of responsibility is LC Development. Hmm.... which means you have to somehow have this formula to ensure LCs are growing in a sustainable manner. Knowing that I also had the People Development area to take charge off, and that I was student - it was a tough and ever so intensive experience which I went through. There were many decisions which I had to make especially in choosing my focus for the year knowing that there are way lots that I could do. And so I asked myself "What would my legacy be as MC Director (People & LC Development) 05/06?". It took me sometime to paint a good picture and make some hard decisions in order for me to be focused ;)

In terms of LC Development, Learning Networks was the strategy which I drove all the way down to each and every LC. I didn't even realized how much was being achieved at the end of my term, and only till when I was filling in my IC07 faci application form. When I read my annual report, I was just amazed of the commitment where every LC is taking part in the national HIV/AIDS Learning Network, members living a HIV/AIDS issue based @XP, and that LCs have started their own Learning Network initiatives which have generated results in the areas of exchange, branding & talent management. And I was just wondering, why I didn't realize this before and only did after a year? Hmmm... well, it's just that an MC would be able to see his fruits of labour usually after 2 -3 years down the road. It's just that many initiatives from the MCs are more long term, and it just takes time for us to witness whether it would be sustainable in the coming years. And today, I'm pretty happy about it ;)

AIESEC-LC-TBS was an infant in my term. The basic systems & processes needed to be in place for them in order for growth and sustainability to happen. I had to make a decision of which LCs I need to put a strong focus in terms of LC development, and I made that tough decision. My role was to help them make things happen. It was having AIESEC-LC-TBS part of the AIESEC Malaysia family and making them take their 1st step in everything.

  • I remembered the LC visits which I made and chats I had with the EBs.
  • I remembered how I got them to fill in SOLA for the 1st time and to explain what the questions meant.
  • I remembered that for the 1st time ever, AIESEC-LC-TBS sent a delegation to NLDS 2005 where they were present for the whole 5-days conference!
  • I remembered AIESEC-LC-TBS members being part of the sub committees for the 1st time to discuss on critical issue in which we were facing.
  • I remembered AIESEC-LC-TBS showcasing themselves for the 1st time at the LC Showcase session to all 400+ NLDS delegates.

NLDS 2005 was the mark which started the turn around of events for the LC. After which, many things just started to take place which includes being part of the weCare project, organizing the 1st ever LLDS, starting off GTs, attendance at International Conferences and the list went on...

NLDS 2oo6 was an entry to the history books as AIESEC-LC-TBS gained full status LC. Though I was not present at this conference, as I was still in Hong Kong for my internship; but I was very much glad & happy for them! And to also know that there is a new motivated EB board which covers all areas for the coming term.

AIESEC-LC-TBS with their Most Progressive LC award

Today, AIESEC-LC-TBS has been awarded the "Most Progressive LC" award for term 06/07 at the recent AIESEC Malaysia Awards Night. And when I got to know about this news, I'm very much happy & excited for them. Someone did asked me before of why I am concern about AIESEC-LC-TBS well being so much; and I just told him that it's just that special connection which I have with the LC... and it's kinda hard to explain.

I suppose that not everyone could have seen what I saw in this LC at the beginning of my term. I saw lots of potential which is untapped. I saw them being a role model LC in the near future. I saw that Top Gun LC would be theirs by the year 2010 ;) And today, they have taken a small leap forward in being recognized of their efforts at the national level.

Melvin & Daryl - AIESEC-LC-TBS LCPs

Would just like to thank so many people who have had faith in AIESEC-LC-TBS and have together joined me in contributing to their success. Special recognition of course to Melvin Chan (AIESEC-LC-TBS LCP 2006) which have pioneered many initiatives and make things real. It was because of his dedication & hard work which has made it possible to where the LC is at now. He would be the one who kick started it all ;) and provided an opportunity for many members to live a life changing experience.

This is a true case study where it takes only a term to make things real ;)
